Christmas words – Snowflake

A snowflake is a single ice crystal that has grown large enough, and may have combined with with others, then falls through the Earth’s atmosphere as ice crystals or snow. A variety of shapes take form as the flake moves through the atmosphere. Consequently, individual flakes are different from others.snowflake

  • The snowflake is a traditional seasonal image for the Chrismas season in North America. Snowflakes are also associated with the “White Christmas” weather that often occurs during the Christmas season
  • During this time of year children often make snowflakes to hang in windows or on trees from paper. The paper is folded several time, a pattern is cut and then the folds are undone giving the child a snowflake.
  • Snowflakes are also popular in pop culture. They are representative of the winter Olympics, are found on many cartoons including Frosty the Snowman and are used in advertising at Christmas time on magazines and flyers.
  • The smallest snowflakes are called Diamond Dust crystals and can be as small as a human hair.
  • About a million billion snowflakes fall each second.
  • The first known snowflake photographer is Wilson Bentley (1865-1931)
